Your first AI agent in 4 steps

One folder, one manual and an AI that learns how you work. Four example agents, every Claude screen step by step, and every prompt ready to copy.

Illustration: Gio at a meeting table with four AI agents, each with their own laptop

Gio gives each of his four agents a task, and they hand the results back to him.

Watch it in one minute

Gio builds an agent and leaves it working 24/7

The folder, the manual, what it learns and the alerts it sends overnight. Everything you'll do in this guide, in 60 seconds.

Before you start

An agent is a folder the AI knows how to read

Three things before step 1: what you need, which Claude you have, and one Windows trick. Five minutes, tops.

What you don't need

  • To know how to code
  • To build a huge automation
  • To write a giant message every time
  • A new, expensive tool

What you do need

  • A task that repeats in your business
  • The data you use to do it: prices, catalog, rules
  • An example of how you want the result to look
  • An AI that works with the folders on your computer, like the Claude desktop app
Illustration: Gio and the Claude agent, each working on a laptop
Which Claude do you have?

The Claude desktop app, with your folder connected

Claude works inside a folder on your computer: it reads your files, creates new ones and remembers what you teach it. You need a paid plan (Pro or higher). The folder is yours, so tomorrow you can open it with a different AI without starting over.

  • New versionNo selector: type right away and connect your folder under "Project or folder".
  • Older versionIf you see "Chat · Cowork" under the box, choose Cowork.

In both, the app has to stay open while it works with your folder.

Mini lesson

What is a .md file?

It's plain text, like a text message, with a little formatting: a # at the start of a line makes it a heading and a - makes it a list item. That formatting is called Markdown, and Claude reads it very well.

It opens with Notepad, which already comes with Windows. You don't have to install anything.

context/prices.md · inside
  1. # Prices for [your company]# = heading
  2. Prices per square, installed:plain text
  3. - Architectural shingles: $450- = list item
  4. - Tear-off of old layer: $90

The trick that avoids the most common mistake

Windows hides the ending of file names. If you can't see it, your manual may actually be called AGENTS.md.txt, and Claude won't recognize it as its manual. Turn it on once and it stays that way:

  • Windows 11In File Explorer: View → Show → File name extensions.
  • Windows 10In File Explorer: View tab → check File name extensions.
Recreation · the real screen may look a little different

Windows 11: the file looked like AGENTS.md, but it was AGENTS.md.txt.

The route · step by step

From an empty folder to an agent that works like you do

Pick your business and follow the steps in order. The 4 steps of the method are 4 phases, and each phase is a few short steps. Finish one, check “Done when…” and move to the next.

Pick your business

Event venue: Quotes quinceañeras, weddings and baptisms and shows the setup in 3D.

Your folder will be called EVENTS-AGENT · 9 steps · swap the sample details for your own.

Phase 1 of 4

Set up the folder

A folder connected to Claude, with its manual and your info.

Step 1 of 9

Create the agent folder

Your agent will live there.

Do this

  1. Open File Explorer and go to Documents
  2. Right-click an empty space → New → Folder
  3. Name it EVENTS-AGENT and press Enter
  4. On Mac: Finder → Documents → right-click → New Folder

Step 3 of 9

Ask it to build the agent

Claude writes the manual, AGENTS.md, and creates the four folders.

Do this

  1. Copy the order and paste it into the Claude box
  2. Replace what is in brackets with your business
  3. Send it: Claude creates the manual and the four folders

# [Your business] · [Task] agent

You are the assistant for [business]. Your job: [the task that repeats].

## Two essential rules
1. If you are missing information, ask for it before continuing.
2. Write down in memory/ what you learn for future jobs.

## Where the information is
- context/: prices, catalog, terms and how we present.
- skills/: one SKILL.md per task; use it when it applies.
- memory/: rules the owner confirmed.
- projects/: one folder per job; work only inside it.

## How to work
1. Read the job and check context/ and memory/.
2. If there is a skill for the task, follow it.
3. Save the deliverables in projects/[job]/deliverables/.
4. Check the numbers before delivering.

context/

How your business works

Prices, catalog, terms and how you present your proposals. You fill it in on day one.

skills/

How each task gets done

Step-by-step instructions. It starts empty: the agent fills it in when something works.

memory/

What it learns along the way

The rules you confirm. It starts empty too.

projects/

Where it works

One folder per job, with its details and its deliverables.

Prefer to do it by hand?Path B

You end up with the same folder. If it's your first time, use the prompt above: it's easier. By hand, it goes like this:

  1. Open your agent's folder in File Explorer (the one from step 1).
  2. Turn on file extensions, like in the "Before you start" trick. That way you see the full name of every file.
  3. Right-click an empty space → New → Text Document.
  4. Delete the whole name, including the .txt, type AGENTS.md and press Enter.
  5. Windows warns that you're changing the extension: choose Yes.
  6. Right-click AGENTS.md → Open with → Notepad.
  7. Copy the template below, paste it (Ctrl + V), and change whatever is in [brackets].
  8. File → Save. Done: you now have the manual.

  • GeneralExtra

    Check for anything sensitive

Review the whole folder and tell me if anything is here that shouldn't be: passwords, card or account numbers, ID documents or medical information.
Only tell me which file it's in and what type it is: don't copy it into your reply and don't delete it.
Questions

What people ask us most

Do I need to know how to code?

No. It is all folders and text files written in plain language, the way you would explain things to someone new on your team.

Which AI do I need?

The Claude desktop app (Windows or Mac) on a paid plan: Pro or higher. You connect your folder with "Project or folder", under the box where you type. If your version still shows the "Chat · Cowork" selector, choose Cowork; if you don't see it, you already have the new version and you just type. The app has to stay open while it works with your folder. Because the folder is yours, tomorrow you can open it with another AI that works with folders without starting over.

What is AGENTS.md and do I have to write it?

It is the agent's manual: a text file inside your folder that Claude reads first every time it starts work. It says who it is, what task it does, its two rules and where everything is. You don't have to write it: Claude creates it for you in step 3 of any guide. If you prefer to do it by hand, open "Prefer to do it by hand?" in step 3 of the path; the template is also in the prompt library, under "General".

Does the agent answer my customers on its own?

No. This agent works when you ask it to: it prepares quotes, schedules or listings and you review before anything goes out. Answering on its own, at any hour, is a different kind of system.

And the 3D party, does the AI make that too?

Yes: it is the second skill in the example. You ask for a 3D view that opens in your browser, with the floor plan, the catalog and both proposals. The one on this page was built the same way, with example prices.

What should I not put in the folder?

Nothing you wouldn't give a new employee: no passwords, no card numbers, no medical records.
